NELSON — The Regional District of Central Kootenay board adopted regulations governing dangerous and aggressive dogs in electoral areas A, B and C at its October 22 meeting.

Dangerous and Aggressive Dog Regulatory Bylaw No. 3009 allows the regional district to place requirements on owners of aggressive dogs and authorizes dog-control officers to seize and impound aggressive or dangerous dogs. The service is intended to respond to complaints about dogs showing aggression toward or attacking people, other dogs or livestock. It will operate on a complaint basis, without regular patrols, according to the RDCK.

The regulations follow an Alternative Approval Process for a separate service-establishment bylaw. Electors could submit forms opposing the service, but fewer than the required 10 per cent did so. The RDCK adopted the service-establishment bylaw June 18. Taxation is scheduled to begin in January 2027, with service delivery beginning that year.
