Nelson seeks nominations for 2027 Sports Ambassador

The City of Nelson is accepting applications and nominations for its 2027 Sports Ambassador, an annual designation recognizing athletes, teams and groups that have achieved a high level of sporting excellence while contributing positively to the community.

Applications and nominations are open until Sept. 25.

Nelson City Council selects one Sports Ambassador each year. The successful individual, group or team will receive a $1,000 honorarium and is expected to be announced at the January 2027 Committee of the Whole meeting.

The city says the program is intended to recognize athletes who lead by example, pursue success in their sport and contribute to recreation and active living in Nelson.

Mayor Janice Morrison said the ambassadors demonstrate the connections created through sport and serve as role models through both their athletic accomplishments and their involvement in the community.

Climber Allen Rollin is Nelson’s 2026 Sports Ambassador.

Rollin has spent more than a decade contributing to the Nelson and West Kootenay climbing community, including developing climbing and bouldering routes throughout the region. He is also a route-setter at The Cube Climbing Gym, and the city credits his West Kootenay Bouldering Guidebook with helping draw attention to the region’s climbing opportunities.

The city credited Rollin with helping make climbing more accessible to athletes ranging from beginners to experienced climbers, while also contributing to Nelson’s reputation as a climbing destination.

Previous Sports Ambassadors include volleyball player Atlyn Proctor in 2025, boxer Lola Brouillette in 2024, ultrarunner Jazmine Lowther in 2023, mountain biker Travis Hauck in 2022, boxer Jesse Pineiro in 2021 and track athlete Matti Erickson in 2020.

Applications and nomination information are available through the City of Nelson’s Sports Ambassador webpage at nelson.ca/sportsambassador.
