OTTAWA — The federal government's temporary suspension of excise taxes on gasoline, diesel and aviation fuels will continue through January 31, 2027, after Bill C-38 received royal assent on October 29.

The Canadian Fuel Affordability Act extends relief introduced April 20. Beginning February 1, 2027, fuel excise taxes will return at half their usual rates until March 31. That means five cents per litre on gasoline and unleaded aviation gasoline, 5.5 cents on leaded aviation gasoline and two cents on diesel and aviation fuel. Full rates are scheduled to resume April 1.

The Department of Finance estimates the extension will provide another $2.9 billion in tax relief, bringing projected savings to $5.3 billion for 2026–27. The federal government says the full suspension saves drivers more than $5 when filling a typical 50-litre gasoline tank. The measure also applies to fuel used in freight transportation and aviation.
