Vernon-born physician Gerald Nowek dies at 68

Dr. Gerald H.G. Nowek, a Vernon-born physician whose obituary describes a medical career that included work in Canada and abroad, died Aug. 28 at Vernon Jubilee Hospital. He was 68.
Nowek was born and raised in Vernon, according to his obituary, which identifies him as a physician and surgeon and says his career included general and family medicine, occupational and industrial medicine, and air-ambulance work in southern Mexico.
The obituary says Nowek graduated from Ross University School of Medicine in 1984. It describes a career that took him around the world, although independent records establishing the full scope of his professional work have not been located.

A creditor matrix filed Aug. 27, 2019, in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas lists Nowek Medical & Asociados at an address in Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche.
The filing was made in the bankruptcy proceedings of EPIC Companies LLC and affiliated debtors. It does not identify Gerald Nowek personally, describe the services provided by Nowek Medical & Asociados or establish his role with the entity.
Ciudad del Carmen is a major centre for Mexico’s offshore petroleum industry, and the obituary says Nowek’s medical career included occupational and industrial medicine. The available records do not establish which companies he worked with or where that part of his practice was based.
The obituary also says Nowek worked as an air-ambulance physician in southern Mexico.
Nowek died at Vernon Jubilee Hospital on Aug. 28.
His obituary describes a medical career that began with his Vernon roots and ultimately extended well beyond the Okanagan.
