OKANAGAN — A 35-year-old Vernon woman was arrested Monday after a newspaper box was allegedly set on fire at Kin Beach, according to Vernon North Okanagan RCMP.

Police said they received a report of a possible arson at the beach on Tronson Road at about 2:45 p.m. on Aug. 10. A witness reported seeing a woman set fire to a newspaper box before walking away.

An RCMP Police Dog Service team was nearby at the time and quickly located a woman matching the description provided to police. She was arrested without incident and taken into custody.

RCMP said in its Tuesday release that the woman remained in custody and was expected to appear in court later that day. Police did not announce any charges in the release, and the investigation was continuing.

The alleged incident comes during a period of heightened concern about fire risk across the Okanagan. The City of Vernon imposed a campfire ban beginning July 10 because of what it described as an Extreme Fire Danger Rating in the area. The city said the prohibition was intended to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires and would remain in place until rescinded by Vernon Fire Rescue Services.

Police have not said the Kin Beach incident was connected to any wildfire, nor have they released information about a possible motive or whether the fire spread beyond the newspaper box.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Vernon North Okanagan RCMP at 250-545-7171 and quote file 2026-13834.
