Surrey man convicted of second-degree murder in 2023 killing

A Surrey man has been found guilty of second-degree murder in the 2023 death of 56-year-old Robb Memory.
Paul John Martin, 45, was convicted Sept. 18 following a trial in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster, according to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.
The trial began March 23 and concluded May 15 before Justice Norell.
Surrey RCMP were called to a residence near 191 Street and 68 Avenue at 11:47 a.m. on Aug. 27, 2023, for a report of a suspicious death. Officers found Memory dead with injuries police said were consistent with homicide.
A suspect was identified at the scene and arrested. The BC Prosecution Service approved one count of second-degree murder against Martin on Sept. 1, 2023. IHIT said Martin has remained in custody since his arrest.
Second-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence. The sentencing judge must also determine how long Martin will be ineligible to apply for parole, within the range set by the Criminal Code.
The case is scheduled to return to court Sept. 24 to set a date for the sentencing hearing.
IHIT has not publicly disclosed the relationship between Martin and Memory, and written reasons for the verdict were not available in the B.C. Courts decisions database as of Sept. 23.
Charges have been laid against a man in connection with a February 2025 collision at Highways 97 and 33 in Kelowna that killed a woman.
