Cranbrook says mail-ballot packages will go out on or about Sept. 28
The City of Cranbrook is preparing for its Oct. 17 municipal election, with mail-ballot packages scheduled to be sent out on or about Sept. 28.

CRANBROOK — Voters planning to cast a ballot by mail in Cranbrook’s Oct. 17 municipal election are being urged to request a package promptly, with the city saying mail-ballot packages will be sent out “on or about September 28.”
Voters can request a package by completing the city’s mail-ballot application, emailing Chief Election Officer Sarann Press at elections.officer@cranbrook.ca or calling 1-866-231-7792. Requests can also be submitted in person or by mail to Cranbrook City Hall at 40 10th Ave. South.
The city’s application form warns that requests received after Oct. 5 may leave too little time for a package to be mailed to the voter and returned before the election deadline. Voters applying after that date are advised to arrange to pick up their package instead.
Mail-ballot requests must be submitted before 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16. Voters can have a package held for their own pickup, authorize another person to pick it up, or ask to have it mailed to their residential address or another address they provide. The city’s application form requires two pieces of identification.
Mail voting is available to eligible resident electors and non-resident property electors. Resident electors must be at least 18 on general voting day, be Canadian citizens, have lived in British Columbia for at least six months before registering, live in Cranbrook when they register and not otherwise be disqualified from voting.
Non-resident property electors must meet the age, citizenship and B.C. residency requirements, have been a registered owner of real property in Cranbrook for at least 30 days before registration and not qualify as a resident elector. Additional rules apply when a property has more than one registered owner.
Completed mail ballots must be received by the Chief Election Officer or designate no later than 8 p.m. Oct. 17 to be counted. Packages can be mailed or delivered by hand to City Hall by 4:30 p.m. Oct. 16, or delivered by hand to the Chief Election Officer at Laurie Middle School Gymnasium between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. on general voting day.
Cranbrook will also hold advance voting from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7 and Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 125 17th Ave. South. General voting will run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 at Laurie Middle School Gymnasium, 1808 2nd St. South.
Special voting opportunities are scheduled for Oct. 15 at several care facilities and East Kootenay Regional Hospital. Those voting opportunities are restricted to admitted patients or facility residents.
Cranbrook voters will elect one mayor and six councillors. Two candidates are running for mayor and 11 are seeking council seats. Seven candidates are seeking five School District No. 5 Area 5 trustee seats covering the City of Cranbrook and RDEK Area C.
The Oct. 17 municipal and school trustee vote is separate from the provincial general election.
Stage 2 water restrictions remain in effect in Kimberley through Sept. 30, when the city says all current water restrictions will end.
