Christina Lake residents invited to housing-policy open house tonight

CHRISTINA LAKE — The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary is holding a public information session Wednesday evening on proposed housing-related changes to Christina Lake’s Official Community Plan.

The Electoral Area C/Christina Lake open house is scheduled for Aug. 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Christina Lake Community Hall. The RDKB’s event listing says participants were asked to pre-register by Aug. 4.

The session is part of a broader RDKB project updating housing-related land-use policies in its electoral areas.

According to the regional district, the targeted changes are intended to respond to provincial housing legislation, including Bill 44, align community-plan policies with zoning amendments adopted in June 2024, and account for projected housing needs over the next five and 20 years. The review will also consider whether local policies should support a broader range of housing options based on the circumstances of individual communities.

The RDKB says the public information sessions are intended to give community members an opportunity to learn about the proposed housing updates, ask questions and provide comments.

The housing-policy work is separate from the broader Area C/Christina Lake zoning bylaw rewrite that has generated several public meetings over the past year. The RDKB announced after a July 22 meeting that the zoning-bylaw project has been put on hold until 2027 because staff do not have capacity to fully respond to the questions and comments raised this year.

Christina Lake’s current Official Community Plan, Bylaw No. 1855, was adopted by the RDKB board on April 10, 2024. The OCP guides planning and land-use decisions in Electoral Area C.

Residents who cannot attend the Christina Lake session can also take part in an RDKB virtual information session Sept. 10 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for electoral areas included in the housing-policy review. Registration is required to receive the virtual-session link.
