One of Canada’s best-known children’s entertainment franchises is back on the big screen, with Toronto-headquartered Spin Master’s PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie opening in theatres Friday.

The third theatrical adventure for the rescue pups trades Adventure Bay for a tropical island populated by dinosaurs and brings along a celebrity voice cast that includes Jennifer Hudson, Snoop Dogg, Bill Nye, Paris Hilton, Terry Crews, Fortune Feimster and Jameela Jamil.

After a mysterious storm, the PAW Patrol crash-lands on a hidden tropical island filled with dinosaurs. There they meet Rex, a pup who has been stranded on the island for years and has become an expert on its prehistoric residents.

Trouble follows when Mayor Humdinger begins recklessly mining the island for its natural resources and triggers a volcanic eruption, sending the pups into a series of large-scale rescues.

The film is another big-screen outing for a franchise with deep Canadian roots.

PAW Patrol was developed as an entertainment property by Spin Master, the Canadian toy and entertainment company founded in Toronto in 1994. The company’s Toronto office remains its global headquarters, and the PAW Patrol franchise launched in 2013.

Canadian filmmaker Cal Brunker returns to direct The Dino Movie and co-wrote the film with Bob Barlen. Brunker also directed the first two theatrical films, PAW Patrol: The Movie and PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie.

The latest film adds a long list of recognizable voices to the pups’ world.

Hudson, Snoop Dogg, Nye, Hilton, Crews, Feimster and Jamil are part of the ensemble, while Ron Pardo returns as Mayor Humdinger and Meredith MacNeill voices Harper Cutlass.

The movie’s soundtrack also brings some star power of its own.

The Backstreet Boys released “Bottle Up” in June, a new original song featured in the film.

The Dino Movie is the third theatrical film in a franchise that began as a Canadian-developed preschool television property and has since grown into an international entertainment brand.

PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie opened in theatres Aug. 14.
