SUMMERLAND — Property owners and their designated representatives can enter specific Bald Range wildfire-affected properties under a Prohibit Entry Order, while general visiting and occupancy remain prohibited as post-fire hazards and recovery work continue.
The District of Summerland moved the listed properties out of the evacuation-order regime at noon Sept. 30. They had remained among the addresses covered by the evacuation order issued Aug. 8 during the Bald Range wildfire.
The new order was issued under B.C.’s Emergency and Disaster Management Act. It prohibits people from entering the affected area for the purpose of visiting or occupying it, with exceptions for registered property owners, people designated by those owners and anyone authorized by the District.
Summerland said the change is intended to allow access for property owners while emergency responders, utility crews, contractors and other recovery personnel continue working in the area. The order itself does not establish a separate appointment, escort or permit process for registered owners or their designates. An earlier temporary-access permit system applied to properties that were still under evacuation order.
The District continues to warn about hazards in the wildfire area, including underground hot spots, fire-damaged trees, unstable slopes and damaged infrastructure. Debris, downed power lines and damaged roads can also make access unsafe, and Summerland has warned that fire-damaged vegetation can increase the risk of debris flows during heavy rainfall.
The Prohibit Entry Order applies to specified addresses on Mott Street, Durick Avenue, Blagborne Avenue, Cartwright Avenue, Garnet Avenue, Denike Street, Garnet Valley Road and Wildhorse Road. The District’s signed order contains the individual civic addresses covered by the restrictions.
Summerland’s State of Local Emergency remains in effect through the end of Oct. 2. As of Oct. 2, the District’s current Bald Range wildfire page continued to list the Sept. 30 Prohibit Entry Order, and no newer District notice changing the access status had been posted.
Residents with questions about the order can contact the District at 236-218-2331.
