Boundary RDKB election set: Areas D and E acclaimed, Christina Lake heads to vote

GRAND FORKS — The election picture is set for the Boundary’s three Regional District of Kootenay Boundary electoral areas, with Linda Kay Wiese and Sharen Gibbs elected by acclamation in Areas D and E and voters in Area C/Christina Lake choosing between Rocio Graham and Rupert Oldroyd on Oct. 17.

Chief Election Officer Anitra Winje issued the declarations under Section 98 of the Local Government Act following the Sept. 18 candidate-withdrawal deadline. Wiese was acclaimed in Area D/Rural Grand Forks and Gibbs in Area E/West Boundary. Both currently serve as directors for their areas, and no director vote will be held in either Area D or Area E.

The RDKB has five electoral areas in total. Outside the Boundary, Ali Grieve was elected by acclamation in Area A, while Area B/Lower Columbia-Old Glory will be decided between James McFaddin and Linda Worley.

The Boundary Sentinel’s Sept. 14 local-election guide listed Wiese and Gibbs as the only declared candidates in their respective areas, but the withdrawal period had not yet ended. The formal declarations now settle those two Boundary contests, leaving Area C as the only contested RDKB electoral-area race in the Boundary.

Advance voting for Area C will be held Wednesday, Oct. 7 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Christina Lake Community Hall, 90 Park Rd. General voting will be held at the same location Saturday, Oct. 17 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Eligible electors can also vote by mail. Applications to have a mail-ballot package sent by mail must be received by 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9. Completed ballot packages can be returned to the RDKB’s Trail office by 4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, or to a voting station by 8 p.m. on general voting day. Ballots received after 8 p.m. Oct. 17 will not be counted.

The RDKB lists Oct. 21 as the last day for the declaration of official election results from voting.
