GREENWOOD — Eleven Greenwood firefighters were called into the hills above the city Sunday night after a wildfire was spotted in the Motherlode area.
The Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department said Monday that four apparatus responded to the fire after the department was notified.
Crews faced steep terrain while working to extinguish the remaining hot spots. The department’s new bush truck was used to pump approximately 500 gallons of water up the hillside to firefighters.
The department said the truck’s new pump performed well during the response.
BC Wildfire Service personnel returned to the area Monday morning to check the fire site, according to Greenwood Fire.
No cause for the fire has been announced, and the department did not provide an estimate of its size. No separate public BC Wildfire Service incident page for the fire could be located Monday.
The fire department also used the incident to remind residents about how wildfire reporting and local fire department dispatches work.
“When a wildfire is reported to BC Wildfire Service, that report does not automatically dispatch your local fire department,” the department said.
Greenwood Fire urged residents who discover a wildfire in or around the community to ensure the local department is also notified so firefighters can be dispatched when needed.
The fire comes while extensive wildfire restrictions remain in place across the Southeast Fire Centre. BC Wildfire Service restrictions currently prohibit Category 1, 2 and 3 open fires in areas covered by the provincial prohibitions.
Greenwood Fire thanked the firefighters who responded Sunday night and BC Wildfire Service personnel for following up at the scene Monday morning.
