GRAND FORKS — Boundary-Similkameen voters who need to register or update their information have until Thursday, Oct. 1, to do so if they want to make sure they receive a Where to Vote card before advance voting begins Oct. 16.
Elections BC lists Oct. 1 as the date to register or update voter information to make sure the card is received in the mail. Eligible voters who miss the deadline can still register in person when they vote.
To vote in the Oct. 24 provincial election, a person must be a Canadian citizen, be 18 or older on Final Voting Day and have been a B.C. resident since April 23.
Voters can register or update their information online or by calling Elections BC at 1-800-661-8683. Elections BC also accepts its voter-registration form by mail, fax or email and provides in-person registration at its Victoria office.
Where to Vote cards tell voters their assigned voting place for Final Voting Day and list advance-voting options in their electoral district. The card is not required to vote, although Elections BC says it can be used as one of two pieces of voter identification. Under that identification option, both documents must show the voter’s name and at least one must show the voter’s current residential address.
Boundary-Similkameen voting places had not been posted as of Wednesday. Elections BC says locations are still being confirmed and will be added to its Where to Vote service when available.
Advance voting runs from Oct. 16 to 21, with voting from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time. Voters can use any advance-voting location. On Final Voting Day, Saturday, Oct. 24, voting runs from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Pacific time and voters have an assigned voting place.
The last day to request a vote-by-mail package online or by phone is Oct. 18. Elections BC must receive completed mail-voting packages by 8 p.m. Pacific time on Oct. 24. Packages can also be requested in person at a district electoral office.
Elections BC provides accessibility services at voting places, including voting assistance, interpreters and voting outside the building for people who cannot enter a voting place. Voters who are deaf or hard of hearing can contact Elections BC through TTY or Video Relay Service at 1-888-456-5448.
Candidate nominations for the provincial election close at 1 p.m. Pacific time on Oct. 3.
The Oct. 24 provincial election is separate from B.C.’s general local elections on Oct. 17. The two elections have different voting dates, locations and eligibility rules. Elections BC administers voting and counting in the provincial election, while local governments and other local jurisdictions administer voting and counting in their own local elections.
