Carly Rae Jepsen is returning to Broadway, this time as a songwriter.
A musical adaptation of the 1999 teen comedy 10 Things I Hate About You, with music and lyrics by the Mission, B.C.-born pop singer and Ethan Gruska, will begin Broadway performances Aug. 17, 2027.
The project has been in development for more than a year, but Monday’s announcement gives the production its first firm Broadway date. The musical was initially announced in April 2025, with Jepsen, Gruska and much of the creative team already attached.
Lena Dunham, creator of the HBO series Girls, and playwright Jessica Huang are writing the book. Christopher Wheeldon will direct and choreograph, while Tom Kitt is handling music supervision, arrangements and orchestrations.
Wheeldon has won two Tony Awards for choreography, for An American in Paris and MJ.
The stage production returns to Padua High and the story of sisters Kat and Bianca Stratford. The 1999 Touchstone Pictures film, written by Karen McCullah and Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith, reworked Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew as a high school comedy.
The movie starred Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Larisa Oleynik.
For Jepsen, the production marks a return to Broadway in a very different role.
She made her Broadway debut as a performer in 2014, taking over the title role in Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella. She began performances in February and remained with the production until June.
This time, Jepsen will be supplying the songs.
The Canadian singer-songwriter, best known internationally for the 2012 hit “Call Me Maybe,” was born in Mission, B.C., and pursued musical theatre before later placing third on Canadian Idol.
Several major details about the Broadway production remain under wraps.
Casting has not been announced, nor has the Broadway theatre. Tickets are not yet available, with the production currently taking signups for news and early ticket access.
An official opening-night date has also not been announced. The Aug. 17, 2027 date marks the beginning of Broadway performances, exactly one year after Monday’s announcement.
Ballet Kelowna dancer Kurt Werner will take his final bow next spring after 15 years with the company, closing a 2026–27 season that will also bring A Streetcar Named Desire back to the Kelowna Community Theatre.
