ROSSLAND — Rossland voters will elect a mayor and six city councillors on Saturday, October 17, with polls open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at City Hall.
Voting will take place at Rossland City Hall, 1920 Third Avenue. The city has confirmed that eligible voters who are not already registered can register at the polling place.
Two candidates are competing for mayor: Lisa Kwiatkowski and Janice Nightingale.
Twelve candidates are running for six council seats: Dan Eheler, Mark Godin, Craig Humpherys, Tara McDougall, Melanie Mercier, Andy Morel, Maya Provencal, Darin Recchi, Sharon Roberts, Trista Sulman, Matthew Watkins and Jeff Weaver.
The city's September 21 election notice also confirmed that Gordon Smith was elected by acclamation as the School District 20 trustee for Electoral Area 5, which includes Rossland and parts of Regional District of Kootenay Boundary Electoral Area B. No vote is required for that position.
To vote as a resident elector, a person must be a Canadian citizen, be at least 18 years old by October 17, have lived in British Columbia for at least six months and be a resident of Rossland. Voters must also meet the other eligibility requirements under B.C.'s Local Government Act.
Eligible B.C. residents who own property in Rossland but live elsewhere may also qualify to vote as non-resident property electors, subject to separate ownership, registration and identification requirements.
Voters who need to register at the polling place must bring two pieces of identification establishing their identity and residence, including at least one bearing their signature. If neither piece shows their residential address, they may make a solemn declaration of residence. Non-resident property electors must also provide the required proof of property ownership and, where applicable, written consent from other owners.
The city offered advance voting on October 7 and 14. Saturday's general voting opportunity will run for 12 hours, from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.
Residents seeking further election information can contact Rossland's chief election officer, Cynthia Anonuevo, through City Hall at 250-362-7396 or elections@rossland.ca.
