YRB issues public warning to travel with care as winter storm strikes

Marc Dale Operations Manager at Yellowhead Road & Bridge Ltd. for Southeast Kootenay is advising the public to drive with care on the highways in the region as Mother Nature strikes with another winter storm this weekend.
"We are forecasted to receive steady snowfall throughout our region for the next four days," Dale said in media release Friday.
"Accumulations will vary yet expect current snow fall to increase in intensity over the weekend."
Dale said temperatures are expected to warm up, which creates compact snow on roads as well as slushy conditions due to sanding and salting.
"Snow accumulations will increase at higher elevation so expect Extreme Winter Driving Conditions over Kootenay Pass all weekend," Dale explained.
"“IF” the forecast is accurate the potential for Avalanche Control over the weekend is high so travelers, check DriveBC for road, weather and scheduled avalanche control updates."
"Highway Cams on Drive BC give you a real time snap shot of conditions and is a great tool to use in advance of travelling," he added.
Dale said YRB will have the necessary resources ready to maintain area roads 24 hours a day.
"Priority will be given to numbered highways, school bus and steep elevation routes. Please watch for our equipment on the roads and give the operators room to keep our roads plowed and sanded," he said.
"Winter is still with us, BIG SNOW all weekend, give yourself extra time to get to your destination and please drive to conditions."
Environment Canada is calling for snow through Sunday with the chance of rain/snow as temperatures increase to zero.
Snow accumulation is between 5 to 10 cm Friday and Saturday.
Monday forecast is more precipitation changing to rain as the temperature rises to a high of plus 2C.
