Hydro telephone scam making rounds in Nelson

The City of Nelson is advising all Nelson Hydro customers of telephone scam making its rounds.
Customers have been complaining of fraudulent telephone calls that impersonate Nelson Hydro staff.
“These calls appear to be targeting businesses at this time and make reference to a past due accounts or a disconnect,” a release on the City of Nelson website said. “The impersonator will ask you to return a call to them at a 1-800 number or an out of province telephone number.”
The scam is not just reserved for Nelson residents. Staff said businesses are also being phoned by scammers, saying they have overdue accounts and need to call a 1-800 number to provide a pre-paid credit card number.
Nelson Hydro is going to communicate through local media advising the public of that staff only contacts customers through legitimate phone numbers listed on its web page or in the phone book and if anyone has questions regarding billing to contact those numbers.
