NPD once again warns public of CRA scam

It doesn’t seem to matter the time of the year or the fact that tax deadline has passed, scammers are continually on the hunt trying to steal money from the pockets of honest citizens.

Nelson Police report receiving numerous complaints from the public regarding telephone calls made by scammers pretending to be from Canada Revenue Agency and/or a collection agency.

“The caller requests personal information (including Social Insurance Numbers) from the public,” said NPD Sergeant Corey Hoy in a media release.

“Nelson Police Department wishes to advise the public that these callers are not associated to the Canada Revenue Agency and have been confirmed to be a scam.”

Hoy said police strongly encourages anyone receiving these types of telephone calls to never provide any personal information. 

“If any members of the public unwittingly provide any personal information or receive deceptive telemarketing, please contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.”

Hoy also said bear complaints continue to flood dispatch at NPD.

“The Nelson Police Department has recently received numerous complaints from the public regarding bears in various parts of the City,” Hoy said.

“Nelson Police Department would like to remind the public that this is the time for bears to be looking for food and to ensure that garbage, compost and waste products are disposed of in a secure manner to avoid any possible confrontations with wildlife.”
