Grand Forks toddler continues to recover from eating raw dough

The past few months have been very trying for a Grand Forks family.
Kyla Hermsen’s two-year-old son Brian spent four weeks in hospital after becoming ill from eating raw cookie dough made from the same Robin Hood flour that was part of a national recall.
“Nothing has changed . . . my son is still recovering,” Hermsen told the Boundary Sentinel recently.
The Robin Hood flour recall has led to 30 reported illnesses in Canada said the Canada Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and the product infected with a strain of E. coli.
Hermsen said Brian became so sick from eating the raw dough his kidneys shut down.
Brian spent four weeks in hospital and Hermsen said her son is still recovering from the illness.
“I didn’t know if he was going to live or die,” she said. “He’s lucky to be alive right now.”
The source of the outbreak remains unsolved.
What is for sure is Brian is a very lucky young lad who, hopefully, will continue to respond to treatment.
But this was a scare too close to home for the Hermsen family.
“I'm still upset over what happened, and my two-year-old, he is still recovering.”
