West Boundary Residents to Receive Green Bin Collection Service

The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) is bringing the successful green bin organic waste diversion program to West Boundary residents starting July 1st, 2017.
The RDKB Board of Directors have approved a 5-year contract to Alpine Disposal and Recycling to provide weekly garbage and green bin collection services to nearly all residents from Christina Lake to Carmi.
Area ‘E’/West Boundary Director Vicki Gee is pleased to note that this will bring curbside garbage/green bin curbside collection services to residents of Sidley Mountain, Bridesville, Rock Creek, Midway, Anaconda and Beaverdell.
“This is an opportunity for West Boundary residents to divert 40% of their garbage from the landfill," the RDKB said in a media release.
"This will extend the life of the landfill and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”
The City of Greenwood has decided not to participate in the green bin service at this time and will continue to receive garbage collection services directly from the City.
“We have seen residents of Christina Lake and Grand Forks enthusiastically use the green bin service for the past few years,” says RDKB Board Chair and Area ‘C’/Christina Lake Director Grace McGregor.
“We are fully behind ensuring all our residents receive first-class curbside waste collection services.”
To participate in the green bin service, residents will be asked to separate organics (any material that
was plant or animal) from the rest of their garbage and place it in the green bin. This includes leftovers, meat, bones, tissue paper, diapers, dog poo, pizza crusts, fruit/vegetable shells/peels/seeds etc.
Residents who are already composting this material are encouraged to continue to do this. Yard and garden waste is not included in this collection service.
The RDKB and Alpine Disposal will begin to distribute green bins and schedules to West Boundary residents in June, in time for the collection after July 1st
. The only cost to access the service is that residents must purchase a $3 garbage tag for their garbage bag. There is no charge for the materials in the green bin.
The RDKB has also withdrawn from participating in the stewardship program for curbside collection of printed paper and packaging. After July 1st, RDKB residents will continue to receive curbside recycling collection service directly from Recycle BC.
Key Changes to RDKB solid waste services in the Boundary as of July 1st:
- Weekly curbside garbage and green bin collection service throughout the Boundary
- Provision of new RDKB garbage/green bin service to most Area E residents
- Expansion of RDKB garbage/green bin service to Bridesville/Sidley Mountain and Granby River Rd/Brown Creek
