Time to show some real Olympic spirit--at the Night of the Local Stars

If the 30 second non-spectacle of  this weekend's state-sanctioned, Coke-sponsored Olympic Torch 'event' hasn't permanently soured you on amateur athletics, this coming Saturday night patriotic Rosslanders will have the opportunity A) for a real party and B) to celebrate the real Olympic spirit as the Rossland Olympic Challenge presents "A Night of Local Stars". All proceeds will be going toward our two local Olympians: Kimberly Joines and George Grey.

According to event coordinator Kathy Moore, "George Grey is a strong contender in the cross country skiing events and Kimberly Joines is one of the top paralympic downhill skiers in the world. We are so proud of both of them. Unfortunately, Canadian athletes do not receive the amount of government support that is enjoyed by athletes of other countries, but Rossland has rallied behind our hometown heroes."

Moore notes that this event will be the culmination of a months-long fundraising effort. The Rossland Challenge has provided donation jars all around town and is still accepting donations online here at the Telegraph. The Olympic Store in the Rossland Pro Hardware has been selling items provided by the athletes with all proceeds going to them. Please note that the Olympic Store will only be open until Jan 30th. Items can be purchased for the low "buy it now" price or can be bought through the silent auction.

The "Night of Local Stars" benefit concert will take place on January 30, 2010 at the historic Miners' Hall. Local performers, all of whom are donating their talents, will include members of the Tuques and the Sons, Brian Kalbfleisch, Honey I'm home and more.

According to Moore, "This will be a cabaret style event. Entry will be by donation and each $5 donation gets a raffle ticket. Bigger donation means more raffle tickets! There will be some great prizes and silent auction items from local retailers. Beer and wine and snacks will be available. Come support our athletes and have a good time too."

Doors open at 8pm.
