WANTED: Local scientists to inspire children

Scientists from all disciplines will get the opportunity to share their passion with children of all ages.

Science World’s Scientists and Innovators in the Schools (SIS) program gets kids excited about science and technology through school visits from local science professionals. To better serve communities in the Kootenay region, we are holding a communication training workshop in Castlegar, for science professionals interested in finding out more about this program. The workshop will take place on Feb. 23, at the Selkirk College, between 5 and 7:30 p.m. The workshop is free, but registration is required.

The SIS program invites scientists, engineers, technologists and technicians to volunteer their time and share their expertise with science classes around the province, on topics such as health, biology, technology and the environment. The workshops are available to grades K–12 and SIS visits are FREE of charge.

Volunteering with SIS has many benefits. SIS provides full support in the form of training workshops, professional development and reimburses many costs, including presentation materials (activity development and consumables) and travel expenses.

“Scientists and Innovators in the Schools gives students the opportunity to learn from experienced scientists and benefit from their first-hand knowledge,” said Pauline Finn, VP of Community Engagement, Science World. “The program is enlightening for kids, because they learn how the concepts in their textbooks are applied in real life. When local scientists participate, kids are excited to learn about the science that’s going on right in their own backyards.”

Since its inception in 1989, over one million students have benefited from the SIS program. Using hands-on activities and career-related information, its volunteers act as enthusiastic and knowledgeable role models, who cooperate with teachers to present an entirely new approach to the discovery of science in the classroom.
