A combination of recent events, global politics, and tragedies has inspired a local spiritual director to organize an outdoor vigil at Castlegar City Hall on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Joan Alexander described the intent on the Facebook event page (link at bottom of article).

“All are welcome to attend a vigil to commemorate the tragic event at the Quebec mosque this past weekend as well as the suffering of all marginalized peoples in our hurting world,” Alexander wrote. “Please bring a candle and your open heart. We will offer a spiritual prayer and light our candles together.”

She also said opportunities will be given to those who wish to speak.

When asked why someone across the country should be concerned about events in Quebec, or those in the U.S. for that matter, Alexander said it's critical, especially during tumultuous times, to provide a safe, inclusive and welcoming place to come together.

“It is important to come together at times like this when there is so much fear and hatred in our world,” she said. “We stand together as a community with those of all faiths, and no faiths, to support and show love to each other.”

She added that people who are struggling, some with recent local deaths and losses, are more than welcome, and may find some comfort and solace in attending.
“We, in Castlegar, have lost loved ones in accidents and from illnesses, these last few months,” she said. “Some of us are grieving and suffering alone. Please come to the vigil. You will be surrounded by your community.”

Again, the vigil will be held in front of City Hall at 4 p.m. on Feb. 1.
