Haney powers Bruins past Ghostriders; Grand Forks takes over third in Murdoch Division
By Boundary Sentinel
Dylan Haney scored three times, including the game-winning marker, to spark the Grand Forks Border Bruins to a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over the Fernie Ghostriders Sunday in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League action in the Boundary City.
The 20-year-old Haney combined with Grayson Neufeld to beat Brendan Henderson in the Riders net for the game winning marker with four minutes remaining.
Fernie, which out shot the Bruins 41-34 in the contest, including 19-15 margin in the third period, tried desperately to even the score but Tyler Loura slammed the door to preserve the victory for Grand Forks.
Grand Forks led 3-2 after one period on goals by Haney, Jordan Robertson and Garret Brisebois.
Justin Peers and Ryan Kennedy replied for Fernie, playing its second game on a mini two-game road swing through the Murdoch Division.
The Ghostriders defeated Nelson Leafs 5-3 Saturday night in the Heritage City.
Fernie scored twice in the second on goals by Devin Memes and Kyle Haugo to grab a 4-3 lead after 40 minutes.
The goals came in a span of 35 seconds.
Haney, scoring twice in the third, and Brisebois each finished the game with three points for the Bruins. Mitch Titus and Peers each had two points for the Ghostriders.
The win leapfrogs the 18-17-3-0-3 Bruins into third spot in the Murdoch Division, one point in front of the Nelson Leafs.
Both teams have played 41 games.
After starting the New Year off with a dismal 0-4 record, Grand Forks has bounced back to go undefeated in three games — two wins and a tie.
The Bruins have a favourable record to complete the season with five of six games at home.
Grand Forks hosts Columbia Valley Rockies Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Grand Forks Arena.
