BREAKING: Update on threat to Mount Sentinel Secondary School

Little new information is being released as the investigation continues into serious threats made to Mount Sentinel Secondary School in South Slocan, but officials continue to caution parents and students to be on guard during any graduation celebrations this weekend.

The school remains closed following Friday's emergency, and it remains unclear whether it will open again on Monday.

Mount Sentinel is a Grade 7-12 school 20 kilometres west of Nelson, with an enrollment of 290 students.

Approximately 55 are in Grade 12 and would have been involved in Friday's grad ceremonies.

A release posted on the school's website today reads as follows:

In continued consultation with School District 8’s Violent Threat Risk Assessment team, Safe School Experts, RCMP, Nelson Police and CYMH/MCFD, parents and guardians are asked to continue to be vigilant with regard to any grad activities, parties or events where students may congregate this weekend.

We are unable to share any further information regarding the nature of the threat as the police continue to be involved in an investigation.  Be assured that the nature of the threat warranted the continued actions taken thus far.

The next update will be provided by 5 pm on Sunday, June 26.  At that time, it will be determined if school can safely be in session on Monday. Decisions regarding Graduation also remain on hold until further notice.  Grads and parents please continue to stay connected through your email lists.
