Housefire causes upwards of $40,000, three sent to hospital with smoke inhalation

A house fire Sunday evening caused significant damage to a Castlegar home, much of it caused by smoke, according Fire Chief Gerry Rempel.

"The Castlegar Fire Department responded to a structure fire at approximately 7 p.m. on March 6 in the 2400 block of 10 Avenue," he said.

"The fire was contained to one room in the basement, however, there was substantial smoke damage throughout the building," he said, adding damages could be upwards of $40,000.

"Sixteen firefighters attended with no injuries, however, the three occupants were transported to hospital with suspected smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, (but) is not considered suspicious."
