NPD report of Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes scam

Nelson Police would like to remind the public of a scam making its rounds in the Heritage City.

NPD Sergeant Corey Hoy said in a media release a local resident had received a suspicious letter Wednesday (September 2) advising her that she had won the Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes.

"(The letter said) she would be responsible for paying the associated taxes and fees," Hoy said.

"The letter further detailed that the recipient keep the attached cheque and letter confidential."

Hoy added in addition, the letter instructed the recipient to leave the letter at home when attending their financial institution to deposit the attached cheque.

NPD strongly encourages receivers of these types of deceptive letters to please keep the letter and contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or the Nelson Police Department at 250-354-3919.

Bears are back, so residents advised to be careful with garbage

NPD Sergeant Corey Hoy said Wednesday (September 2) at approximately 8:02 pm, the dispatch received a request for service in the Fairview area due to a bear rummaging in some residential garbage that had been left out. 

NPD would like to remind the public that this is the time for bears to be looking for food and to ensure that garbage, compost and waste products are disposed of in a secure manner to avoid any possible confrontations with wildlife.
