Our upcoming movie is The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared, based on the internationally best-selling novel of the same title by Jonas Jonasson!  You won't want to miss this laugh-out-loud zany comedy.  An added benefit is the highlights of history from the last century. Our March 31st film will be Leviathan, the acclaimed Russian film which won the Golden Globe and is Oscar- nominated for best foreign film.  This satirical drama critiques power, politics and corruption  in Putin's Russia.

Synopsis

From the land that brought us The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and The Girl Who Played With Fire (Sweden) comes Spotlight Films’ next offering, The 100-Year Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared.

Based on the internationally best-selling novel by Jonas Jonasson, this is the fantastic story of a 100-year-old man who, on his 100^th birthday, decides it's not too late to start over and escapes from the retirement home during the celebration for the Centenarian. For most people it would be the adventure of a lifetime. For retired explosive expert Allan Karlsson (Robert Gustafsson, Four Shades of Brown, Screwed in Tallinn) the unexpected and unlikely journey is not his first. For a century he'd made the world uncertain, and now he is on the loose again.

In Forrest Gumpesque fashion the unlikely protagonist eats dinner with the future U.S. president Harry S. Truman, hitchhikes with Winston Churchill, travels on a riverboat with the wife of Mao Zedong, and walks across the Himalayas……oh, and is chased by drug dealers after snatching a suitcase full of cash after departing the seniors’ facility.

This darkish, consistently amusing, absurdist/slapstick comedy, directed by Felix Herngren (a variety of Swedish television series’), who also co-wrote the screenplay with Hans Ingemansson, has won (so far) five awards, including Audience Choice at the Chicago International Film Festival; Best Film, Durban Intn’l Film Fest and Audience Award, Guldbagge Awards (Sweden).

Gustafsson (50), along with the makeup artists, does a pretty decent job of doubling his age. You can catch Gustafsson, sometimes dubbed “the funniest man in Sweden”, on YouTube in a 55 sec clip titled The Finnish Way of Drinking. The hilarious parody is verifiable through personal experience…..though the nationality was Norwegian…..close.

The 100-Year Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared will be showing at the Gem Theatre Tuesday Feb 24 at 7:30 pm.
