CRIME CLIPS: School buses delayed due to jack-knifed trailer

Jack-knifed tractor-trailer delays traffic
On Feb. 5 at 7:45 p.m. Midway RCMP were dispatched to the scene of a jack-knifed tractor-trailer, according to Cpl. Judson Mayes of the Midway RCMP. The accident occurred 5 km west of Midway, just past the scales off Hwy 3.
Apparently the 2012 Freightliner was heading east on Hwy 3 when it hit some ice and lost control, sliding into the westbound lane and then jack-knifing partially into the ditch.
When officers arrived at the scene, the rig was blocking both lanes of traffic. Alternating single lane traffic was put into effect until 9 a.m. resulting in delays for local school buses. A representative from the Ministry of Transportation was brought in to assist with traffic.
The Fire Department tended to the spilled diesel fuel and oil from the semi. Cpl. Mayes stated, “The driver had back pain and so an ambulance was called in [that] took the male driver to Grand Forks Hospital to get checked out.”
Copper wire stolen from FortisBC
At 7:21 a.m. on Jan. 28 a report was received regarding the disappearance of several pounds of copper wire. According to Staff Sgt. Harrison of the Grand Forks RCMP, an unknown suspect entered the contractor storage yard at FortisBC’s garage and made off with two 20lb copper reels, two 30lb copper hand coils and 30 lbs of grade two/zero copper wire. “There are no suspects or witnesses at this time,” said Harrison, “so if anyone has any information we sure would like to hear about it.”
Pick-up truck hits pedestrian
On Jan. 29 at 5:30 p.m. Grand Forks RCMP received a report of a minor injury accident involving a pedestrian and a truck. According to Harrison, the accident occurred at the intersection of 4th Street and Central Avenue. Officers attended and obtained reports from both the driver and pedestrian.
“The driver was making a left turn onto Central Avenue as an oncoming vehicle had on its high beams,” said Harrison. The headlights temporarily obscured the driver’s vision and he failed to see the pedestrian on the cross walk. The 1992 Ford Ranger pickup brushed the pedestrian who, according to Harrison, “felt a thump and was knocked to the ground.”
Fortunately only minor injuries were sustained due to the slow impact speed. “The driver stopped as soon as he nudged him,” said Harrison. The 71-year-old Grand Forks male was checked out by the attending BC Ambulance workers and was released after determining he had only suffered a sore hip and leg and a minor scratch on his hand from the fall.
The 58-year-old male driver from Grand Forks was not charged in the incident.
Roadside screening results in license suspension, impoundment
AN RCMP officer noticed a vehicle leaving the Christina Lake Community Hall parking lot at 1:31 p.m. on Jan. 31. Suspecting the driver had been drinking, the officer pulled the vehicle over and questioned the driver, who denied any alcohol consumption. “However,” said Harrison, “the constable could smell liquor coming from him.”
The 36-year-old male driver from Christina Lake complied with a demand for a breath sample, which “indicated a warm” and resulted in a three-day license suspension. The vehicle was also impounded for three days.
Tools and computer stolen
A residential break-in was reported at 10:27 a.m. on Feb. 1. The Grand Forks home was apparently was being utilized as a shop. Sometime between Jan. 29 and Feb. 1, an unknown suspect or suspects gained access into the house through breaking a window. Harrison reported that “a compressor, two drills, two brad nailers, two socket sets and a laptop computer” were stolen. There are no suspects or witnesses at this time.
Driver suffers minor injuries
A single vehicle collision was reported to RCMP on Feb. 1 at 10:30 a.m. The accident occurred west of Grand Forks on Hwy 3.
According to Harrison, “The driver had already left the scene,” when officers responded. Apparently a friend drove the 59-year-old Grand Forks male to the hospital where he was treated for a laceration to his forehead.
Harrison said that the man was travelling east near Sleepy Hollow Road when he lost control of the blue 2008 Mazda B2300 and went of the road to the left. “Snow and slippery conditions contributed to the crash,” noted Harrison. Damage to the vehicle is estimated at over $5000.
TV stolen from Extra Foods
On Feb. 1 at 1:11 p.m. Extra Foods in Grand Forks reported the theft of a television set from the store. A 34-year-old Grand male and a 33-year-old female, both from Grand Forks, were arrested in the matter. “The investigation is proceeding,” said Harrison.
