Incumbent Mayor John Dooley may not have won Saturday at the polls, but he does have the support of the younger crowd after the topping the Student Vote results Friday.

Nelson students joined more than 29,000 fellow classmates across the province are taking part in the Student Vote local government elections.

Students took time to vote for the official candidates running in their municipality or regional district.

Their vote follows a series of instruction and activities focused on government and elections, research into the candidates and local issues, as well as dialogue with family and friends.

In Nelson, more than 1700 students at Hume Elementary, Trafalgar Middle School, L.V. Rogers High School and St. Joseph’s School took to the voting booth to elect Dooley as mayor over Deb Kozak and Pat Severyn.

Joining the incumbent around the council table were Jason Peil, Anna Purcell, Bob Adams, Robin Cherbo, Michael Dailly and John Paolozzi.

The official results had Deb Kozak defeating Dooley with Purcell, Adams, Cherbo, Dailly, Janice Morrison and Valerie Warmington as councilors.

Student Vote numbers had more than 29,286 students casting ballots from 276 schools across BC.
