Weekend Wetlandkeepers Course coming to GF

The BC Wildlife Federation is running a two and a half day workshop called Wetlandkeepers at Boothman’s Oxbow Provincial Park from June 14 to June 16. 

Up to 25 participants will learn the importance of wetland ecosystems and stewardship techniques in order to further enhance these sensitive areas. The workshop delivers technical skills geared to training participants to conserve and protect wetlands in their community. These skills include wetland mapping; learning about wetland hydrology (movement, distribution and quality of water); amphibian, plant and animal identification; and surveying techniques and soil sampling. On completion of the course, participants receive a certificate.

Wetlandkeepers is taught by an expert panel of instructors including Neil Fletcher (Wetlands Education Program Coordinator) and Lisa Tedesco (habitat biologist with the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations).

Boothman’s Oxbow is an important area for waterfowl and the wetland is managed, in part, with Ducks Unlimited and members of the Grand Forks Wildlife Association.The park includes rare and ecologically important black cottonwood habitat with numerous provincially red- and blue-listed species.

The workshop is being offered in partnership with the Christina Lake Stewardship Society, Regional District of Kootenay Boundary, Granby Wilderness Society, Boundary Weed Management Committee, and Grand Forks Wildlife Association.
