Previous story:

A fire in the waste wood piles at Interfor is covering the Castlegar/Robson area with smoke, but officials say firefighting efforts are beginning to pay off.

Fire Chief Gerry Rempel told the Source at 5:15 p.m. that high winds had originally made the fire difficult to fight.

"I think we're getting a handle on it now, the wind has died down a bit," he said. In saying "we", he's referring to the Celgar emergency response team, the Castlegar and Robson fire departments, and two helicopter/bucket crews at work dousing the blaze.

Rempel said there are no people or structures threatened by the fire at this time.

No cause has yet been determined.
