Two killed in Slocan car crash

Two people have died after a car accident north of Slocan City last night, according to West Kootenay Traffic Services Cpl. John Ferguson.
“At approximately 7:30 p.m., the Slocan Lake RCMP Detachment and West Kootenay Traffic Services attended a single car fatality on Highway 6, north of Slocan City in the bluff area,” he said.
“A pickup truck with two occupants failed to negotiate a left hand curve on the highway and went into the pull out and over the embankment.
The vehicle was engulfed in flames on attendance and two unidentified bodies were located inside the vehicle, both deceased.
“At the time of the incident, the roads were snow covered and it was snowing heavily.”
He said police believe the two victims are not local residents, explaining that even once police have convincing anecdotal evidence of who the people are, the names won’t be released until their identities can be confirmed with DNA testing, which could take five or six weeks.
“They’re not recognizable, so we have to be 100-per-cent sure, and the only way to do that is through DNA testing,” he said, adding the vehicles license plates were either missing or destroyed in the conflagration.
