UPDATED: Border patrols shut down drug smugglers

Grand Forks RCMP seized 100 pounds of methamphetamine (meth), $20,000 and two suspects who may have been planning to smuggle the drugs across the Canadian border on Sunday. The estimated value of the meth on the street is $755,250.

 

The RCMP were called at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 4 by the United States Border Patrol, who'd been watching the two male suspects cross the border illegally from the United States into Canada close to the Carson Border crossing.

 

The drugs, are now confirmed to be methamphetamine, said Grand Forks RCMP Staff Sergeant Jim Harrison.

 

The men, both Canadian citizens from Surrey B.C., are unknown in the local area, said Harrison. They were arrested and released in Canada under the condition they appear in court once a date has been set.

 

The suspects were caught crossing the border without the drugs. The drugs were found hidden in close proximity to where they crossed on the American side of the line. The contraband has been handed over to the Drug Enforcement Agency in the United States according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection office.

 

Names of the suspects, exact quantity of the drugs and the monetary value of the drugs can not be released until the investigation is complete, said Harrison.

 

The arrest and seizure was a joint effort between U.S. Border Patrol, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Canadian Border Services Agency.
