Local MLAs say students at Selkirk College will benefit from new technology and trades equipment

New Democrat MLAs Brittny Anderson and Katrine Conroy, both alumni of Selkirk College, say today’s students will gain hands-on skills thanks to new technology and trades equipment upgrades at local campuses.

“Our communities rely on graduates from Selkirk College for all the knowledge and skills they bring to their careers,” said MLA Conroy. “Making sure students have modern tools and equipment is just one way that we are supporting Selkirk’s work to strengthen our workforce and help our communities be more vibrant and resilient.”

Selkirk College will receive up to $150,000 to support the Digital Fabrication and Design, Fine Wood Working, Geographic Information Systems, Health Care Assistant, Milling/Machining, Nursing, and Welding programs. This upgraded equipment will be available at both the 10^th Street and Silver King campuses in Nelson, and the Castlegar and Trail campuses.

“Preparing students for success is exactly why Selkirk College is such a great place for an educational journey,” said MLA Anderson. “New, state-of-the art equipment will help students and staff get the most out of their learning experience, and as a Selkirk alum myself, I’m so happy that we’re able to support their work.”

Selkirk College is one of 20 institutions across the province that are each receiving up to $150,000 to buy equipment for trades and technology programs, with a total government investment of $3 million. Public post-secondary institutions will replace obsolete equipment and acquire up-to-date technology, which will ensure students’ training remains relevant and meets the needs of employers.

Investing in advanced education and skills training for people is part of the New Democrat government’s plan to build back a stronger B.C. for everyone.
