Kenneth Nelson stopped at Fas Gas Plus on Van Horne Street in Cranbrook to buy ice-fishing bait, but ended up leaving with a lot more than worms after realizing the Lotto 6/49 ticket he’d purchased for the April 25, 2020 draw was worth exactly $48,258.70.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Nelson decided to check his tickets periodically, and only a few at a time.

“I had a few lottery tickets to scan,” Nelson recalled. “I pulled out two to validate. I won $1 from the first one I checked and the second one was the big winner.”

“I asked the retailer to verify my ticket since I wasn’t wearing my glasses. The machine froze and the amount flashed on the screen. I was so surprised!”

The Cranbrook resident says he enjoys using Quick Pick to select his numbers and usually purchases the $10 Big Jackpot Pack.

Nelson says he plans to invest his prize and will put the rest away for retirement. “It’s nice to win,” he added. “It feels great!”
