700 arrested in NYC during Wall Street march

Over 700 demonstrators, participants in the Occupy Wall Street movement, were arrested Saturday evening. In an attempt to imitate pro-democracy movements of the Arab Spring in places like Egypt and Libya, participants have been camping out in Zuccotti Park to protest the dominance of corporate interests in American life.

Observers on the scene state that the marchers, who were headed from Brooklyn to Manhattan, were allowed to pass one police line in order to gain access to the roadway where they were blocked by a second line and then arrested, the implication being that protesters were 'tricked' into marching on the road as opposed to the bridge's pedestrian walkway, thereby facilitating the arrest process.

According to a Saturday morning posting on the group's website,

We the 99% will not be silent and we will not be intimidated. This Saturday thousands more of us will march together as one to show that it is time that the 99% are heard. Join us on the 2nd week anniversary of your new movement.

We are unions, students, teachers, veterans, first responders, families, the unemployed and underemployed. We are all races, sexes and creeds. We are the majority. We are the 99 percent. And we will no longer be silent.

Following Saturday's events, a further 50 protests are being planned across the nation under the umbrella of a group called Occupy Together.
