War fallen remembered at annual ceremony

Bagpipes cut through the chilly November air as the Remembrance Day parade and services got underway in Grand Forks today. The solemn parade of legion members, dignitaries, members of the services, cadets, police, fire, paramedics, scouts and guides were led to the cenotaph by the Grand Forks Pipes and Drums.

 

After singing O Canada, there was two minutes of silence to honour the dead and fallen from past and current wars. A local pilot contributed to the salute with a low fly-by over the city.

 

Four girl guides recited the time honoured poem, In Flanders Fields. The names of the soldiers on the cenotaph were read aloud while the traditional laying of the wreaths took place.

 

After the wreaths in honour of community members and family members were laid, Christina Lake Fire Chief Ken Gresley-Jones read the community wreath poppies donated by local businesses. The service ended with a prayer by Rev. Simon Shenstone.

 

Dignitaries included MLA John Slater who laid the wreath for the Provincial Government, Mayor Brian Taylor, City Councillors Gene Robert, Cher Wyers, and Chris Moslin.

The Royal Canadian Legion hosted a lunch and social after the procession from the cenotaph back to their hall.
